A developer from Prague named Luboš Doležel is trying to change that with 'Darling,' an emulation layer for OS X. There has been no robust equivalent allowing Mac applications to run on Linux, perhaps no surprise given that Windows is far and away the world's most widely used desktop operating system. Linux users who want to run Windows applications without switching operating systems have been able to do so for years with Wine, software that lets apps designed for Windows run on Unix-like systems. It's great if you have experience in developing for macOS or iOS, but it's absolutely not required to start contributing. Start by reading the documentation and our blog to get familiar with Darling internals. Come talk to us if you're interested in working on this! A significant challenge here would be to write our own implementation of UIKit.

Yes, in the long run, we'd like to be able to run iOS apps on ARM devices (like most Android phones). We use The Cocotron as a basis for our Cocoa implementation, along with the Apportable Foundation and various bits of GNUstep.ĭo you have plans for supporting iOS apps? We do, and in fact, Darling is largely based on the original Darwin source code published by Apple.
See this issue for more details.ĭo you know about, GNUstep, The Cocotron and other projects? Darling requires a real Linux kernel to run. Darwin is the core operating system macOS and iOS are based on. The name Darling is a combination of 'Darwin' and 'Linux'. No! We only directly use those parts of Darwin that are released as fully free software. It requires some special setup for now though, so do not expect it to work out of the box just yet.

Another similar project is Anbox, for Android apps.Īlmost! This took us a lot of time and effort, but we finally have basic experimental support for running simple graphical applications.
We aim to fully integrate apps running under Darling into the Linux desktop experience by making them look, feel and behave just like native Linux apps.Īnd it is! Wine lets you run Windows software on Linux, and Darling does the same for macOS software. Sit back and enjoy using your favorite software. Mach, dyld, launchd - everything you'd expect.ĭarling does most of the setup for you. It is developed openly on GitHub and distributed under the GNU GPL license version 3.ĭarling implements a complete Darwin environment. Like Linux, Darling is free and open-source software.

CrossOver Linux doesn't have the overhead of the Windows OS like a virtual machine, which means apps run at native speed, games play at full fps, and programs gain Linux OS integration.ĭarling runs macOS software directly without using a hardware emulator. Run thousands of Windows programs on your favorite Linux distros like Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, Debian, RHEL and more with the simple installation of CrossOver. Of course, a PPC running on a Windows machine just screamed out for me to try and get it to run Mac OS-X.
There it was on the net, something called PearPC, which is a G3 emulator for Windows and Linux environments. PearPC running Mac OS-X 10.3 A How To! By Owen Rubin. Darling is a translation layer that lets you run macOS software on Linux
